Customer Buzz
"Great for newborns-love this stroller!" 2010-02-05
By Rayreiko (Washington DC)
Preface: We were fortunate enough to receive this stroller as a shower gift, but knowing what I know now I think paying almost $600 for this stroller is completely worth it. In addition, I have no prior extended stroller experience, so my observations are from a neophyte's perspective.

Our infant is 4 weeks old so I can't speak to the seat functionality of the stroller yet, but as a first-time mother who lives in a 1-bedroom urban apartment where space is a premium, this stroller has been a real boon. Yesterday, we went to the grocery store and I was able to fit 3 full reusable grocery bags in the undercarriage storage compartment. I'm just learning about all of the stroller doodads and such (like hooks and caddies) and I'm not sure that we need them except perhaps to have an extra place to hold the diaper bag.

Things I love about the stroller:

1)Ease of folding: I'm 5'5", medium build and fairly fit, but when we tested other strollers (Bugaboo Frog and Chameleon, the Bob Revolution, Orbit and Stokke Xplory) they were quite cumbersome to fold. I found that the Vista was the easiest to fold and store. It's not exactly a 1-handed fold like the City Mini (which we considered), but it's quick and easy. We do have a car, so when I am alone and have to wrangle the car seat with the baby and the stroller, it's so nice to know that I can quickly and easily get the frame folded and in the back of our car.

2)The wheels: We've had 3 snowfalls since our baby was born so I've definitely tested the stroller wheels in difficult conditions. Our city's sidewalks are also incredibly uneven, so combined with snow, it makes navigating the stroller challenging. I'm a novice at stroller navigation, but feel fairly comfortable taking the baby out even when the sidewalks are wet and snowy. The baby seems comfortable even when we hit some rough sidewalk patches. We live at the top of a steep hill and this may be a biased observation, but I feel like the Vista does seem to "ride" better than the other strollers I've seen in our neighborhood. (we live in a heavily Bugaboo and Graco stroller 'hood.)

3)The car seat adapter: this is an add-on, but I am so glad that we invested in it. We have a Chicco keyfit30 car seat and the adapter is essential. The carseat and baby are quite heavy to lift together. With the adapter, I can manage both the car seat and baby on my own. In addition, we have more transportation options when we walk around our neighborhood; we can either use the bassinet or the car seat. It's great to have the additional flexibility and not need to have a snap and go.

4) Sturdy but manageable: I like the ruggedness of the frame, but it's lightweight enough for me to manage. I had a C-section so lifting things isn't as easy for me as others probably, but I haven't had a problem with lifting any of the Vista components.

5) The undercarriage storage compartment: this is one of the biggest advantages of this stroller. You can fit a lot of items in the storage compartment. When you live in the city, it's invaluable because we don't rely on our car as much to get our day-to-day errands accomplished. I can stop by the grocery store, do some light/moderate shopping and stow everything underneath.

6) The carseat rain/sun/wind shield: Another add-on and worth the $20. I'm a bit sensitive about germs and people touching the baby when she's still so young. The mesh rainshield lets the world see the baby, but keeps them at a good distance. Plus, it does its obvious job of keeping the elements out.

7) Aesthetic/Color: not an objective view, but I think the styling, color and quality of the fabric is impeccable. I love that the bassinet interior fabric is made from soy fibers and organic cotton. The orange color is quite distinctive. I hope that it improves driver's visibility of us as we cross major streets so that they are more careful.

Things I'd improve in future models:

1) Width of frame: it's a tad wider than I'd like, so sometimes it can be a bit tight to get through smaller aisles or doors. I've never gotten stuck though.

2)Bassinet bugshield: it looks cool in the marketing photos, but it's a mess to deal with. There should be more strategically placed velcro attachments. The shield sort of flops around once you take off one side and the top part always falls down. I wish the design was similar to the car seat rainshield which uses a frame system and elastic.

3) Bassinet length/width: I'd add an inch in width and 1.5" in length. Our baby isn't gigantic, (she was born at 6 lbs, 4 oz., 19.5" and is now 7 lbs, 6 oz, 20.5")but I feel like we won't be able to use the bassinet after 3 months since the bassinet is a bit narrow and short.

Overall, though I'd highly recommend this stroller to anyone who is considering a travel stroller system.
