 "Great when it works" 2009-10-12
By MariaT
Before purchasing, I read reviews on this soother and was worried about the bad reviews that said it stopped working after a short while. Then I saw others who commented on those reviews and stated they just needed to change the batteries as indicated in the directions. I bought this soother sure that I would be happy with it if I did as the others suggested. Well, when it came we took out the batteries that came with it and put the ones as directed. It worked for a few weeks then all of a sudden just wouldn't play or would play but sound creepy. I can't imagine the batteries are dead already (4 C's) when it really wasn't used much and only for a few weeks. I'd say try something else if you're shopping.

 "consistent problem with motion" 2009-10-11
By Celia's Mom (Raleigh, NC)
I purchased this product from Target yesterday. It looked wonderful and advertised so many great features. The problem was that the motion did not work - right out of the box. Of course, I had installed brand new batteries so that was not the problem. After looking online and reading reviews, it appears to me that this is a consistent problem with the unit. I will not give it a second chance. Taking it back.

 "Baby Einstein Crib sounds" 2009-10-11
By T. Bartley
The water sounds are great for baby. But when I turned it up on high, the sound quality is really poor. It gets a kind of static. The remote only turns it back on for a little while after the last time it is turned on. So that is annoying. When it goes off, it fades out, which is good. But when you use the remote to reactivate, it comes back on abruptly. And it would sometimes startle baby out of sleep.

We are in the same boat as several here. The product worked fine for about 2 months and then the gradual shut down commenced...i at first, that that the product was haunted, lol. But we did replace the batteries (all instructions followed) and the product now refuses to work. Not a happy consumer are we.

"Great entertainer!!!! (Mom of 4 month old)" 2009-11-20
By Christopher F. Savidge
My son loves this gym. He squeals and chatters away while playing on it. It has been a lifesaver for me due to Jack being such a high need baby (Needs to be held most of the time, and more fussy than not). He has spent over 45 minutes playing on this mat!!! The music is really fun, and the lights are a nice touch. Jack has been using this from about 2 months of age on, and loves to grab and shake the rattle (which is not cloudy on my mat) and will grab and shake the other toys at the same time. It is so much fun to hear him having such a good time : )

We received this mat as a gift for our 2 month old and it's definitely been the toy that's captivated him the most thus far.

Pros: He really likes the mirror and it is easy to position the dangling toys so that he can hit and kick them, which causes him (and us) endless amusement :) The mat feels nice and there is a lot to entertain him.

Cons: I laundered the mat per instructions after our son was sick on it. It cleaned up fine, but came out of the washer covered in what looks like tiny pieces of tissue, which could possibly be a choking hazard. I've only had to wash it once so far, so I don't know if that happens every time, but it was a pain to clean it up before leaving it to dry. Also, the electronic toy is not my favourite - the flashing lights are fast and erratic and after getting down to my son's level and looking at it from the same distance as he was, I ended up switching it off because it just seemed like way too much stimulation; there was no pattern to the lights and they were sooo much faster than the music it just didn't seem like a good idea to have that happening 6' from my sons eyes.

So in conclusion, using it without the electronic toy, it's a great product. Lots to see and play with and most importantly, my son likes it. As a gift, I'm happy with it. If we'd paid $[...] for it, I'd probably return it and get a mat with a different lights/sound component.

 "The best I've found!" 2009-10-19
By Nevin's Mommy (PA)
I have gotten several different play mats for my 4 month old and none of them entertained him, but this one does. He'll sit for up to 30min. on his own laughing and making noises on this mat!

Strengths:

-Very colorful and grabs his attention

-Lights and music (can be set to activate by motion, touch, or to play for 15min. which is the longest I've found) this is what sold me on the product!

-Tons of attachable and detachable toys that could be used in cribs and playpens

-Great sized mirror

-Whale pillow, which he loves to use for tummy time and supervised

-Easy to store and move around

-Can see him using it for months to come!

Negative:

-One of the toys is really strange (two round/flat discs) that I removed and I don't see him playing with

This is a must for anyone with a little one!! It gives you a little time in the day to get a few things done and the babies LOVE it!!!

"Feels Cheap Compared to Other Playmats" 2009-10-15
By amk (New York State)
I chose this playmat because of the positive reviews. I was disappointed. I received a Tiny Love playmat as a gift, and I highly recommend it over this one. My biggest issue is the cheapness of the material--both the feel and the images. There's little threads hanging out all over it. It's also more complicated to put together compared to Tiny Love. The hanging toys are mediocre at best. There's one rattle my twins really enjoy so I actually tranferred it to the other playmat.

My daughter loves this gym. She spends about a half hour every morning (after chattering my ear off) playing by herself with this toy. Her favorite is the turtle rattle/links guy. She talks up a storm to it and loves to bat at everything - she's 3 months old.

 "Great for older babies" 2009-11-24
By Amber C. King (Alabama, USA)
I got this for my child when he was 5 mo old and he was only interested for 1-2 minutes. However, I put it up and brought it back out when he was almost a year old and he LOVES it. Now that he can put his hands around it and actually pick it up himself, he likes it a whole lot more. We found that the toy was pretty heavy for a 3-6 month old, so for us it worked much better when the baby was a little older.

 "Kaleidoscope" 2009-08-20
By Sienna's Mommy (Florida)
We bought this for our daugher when she was a few months old since she loved to watch lights and colors. It also seemed like a toy she could work herself somewhat. The toy is listed as appropriate for 3+ months but she didn't use it (without Mommy or Daddy pressing the buttons) until about 6 months or better for a couple reasons. The kaleidoscope is heavy - too heavy for a 3-6 month old to lift with any control. Also, the handles are very wide so tiny hands can't grasp and push the button on the inside to activate the music/lights. The buttons on the inside are the same color as the handle so little babies can't tell what to do - there's no contrast. She's 11 months now and after pressing the buttons a few times she's bored and moves on. It's a cute toy but definately needs 6+ months to begin to enjoy it.

 "Not my favorite" 2009-08-19
By A. Larson
The toy is not a kaleidoscope. Its actually a little boring for my 9 month old...partly because she doesn't get the part where you have to push the buttons and they don't stand out from the handle so its not intuitive for her to press anywhere...So, long story short...she grabs the handle and it does.....nothing. We have to push the buttons for her. Also, the little mirror thing on the bottom is a waste. I wish the colors flashed on the bottom part too. If I had to do it all over again, I'd choose to spend my toy dollars elsewhere.

"Fun for the first five minutes" 2009-08-05
By Mommy of 2 (Wisconsin)
Bought this for my six month old, she really does not care for it at all. My five year old autistic son did enjoy it for about five minutes and set it aside. It has been collecting dust since.

It is just another toy where you press a button and get a short song and light show, nothing more.

for learning colors in 3 languages. Wish they had this when my oldest was a baby. But he is 4.5 and still loves this toy more than the little one. Easy for kids to grasp and use. We love it!

 "Great toy" 2009-09-23
By Stacie Mascolo (Fort Carson, Colorado)
My daughter is in love with this toy. I purchased it for her when she was 10 weeks old and she immediately decided it was her favorite. She smiles at it every single time she gets a diaper change and chatters away, which really helps to keep arms and legs a bit more still. I'm probably ordering a second as a backup in case something tragic happens to the first one!

My boy is about 3 months old and this has been his favorite toy since he was a few days old. The Octoplush always gets him to smile and giggle. I would buy this 100x over just to see the joy on my little guys face. You can't go wrong.

"Good infant toy. I may have some answers for problems listed in other reviews!" 2009-09-07
By kjs
I'm not a huge fan of Baby Einstein stuff, but my son loved this octopus as an infant. We would play the songs for him again and again and he seemed to like it. One thing they don't show you is that the underbelly of the octopus is colorful and a baby likes to look up at the BOTTOM of the octopus, not just the face part. We hung this toy (has a velcro strap on top) over our son's bassinet when he was awake during the days. When we took it down to play with it with our son, we would sometimes spin it around while he looked at the bottom of it. It held his attention so he must have liked it.

It is soft and (I thought) a decent size. It's true that it doesn't "sit up" well for long. It ends up getting kind of floppy-headed and its head will lean back on its legs when it's set down on the floor. This doesn't affect its use in any way, it's just an annoyance for those of us who keep trying to get its head to sit up nice.

The songs are played by pressing on the head. It IS really sensitive, but that's so a baby can make it work. The color words are played by pressing the circles on the feet. They are too difficult for a baby to work.

I didn't mind the music, although I agree with one reviewer who said one of the songs reminded her of circus music. There is one song which is kind of frentic (I called this one "the crazy song"). The music is very electronic sounding, not soothing. This toy is definitely designed for play time.

My son is almost 2 now and we still have the Octoplush. Here are my observations after having this thing for so long:

1) The toy will go crazy when the batteries are low. Before they stop working, they seem to make the toy act bizarre and work in weird ways. If your Octoplush is acting up, it may be the batteries need to be changed.

2) The songs are long (as one reviewer pointed out). But you can stop the music at any time by pushing one of the buttons on the feet. It'll say "blue" (or whatever color you push) and then be quiet.

3) My son can barely get the feet buttons to work even now. I can get them to work just fine (it's not broken), but even a young child (not a baby) has trouble with it.

4) It's true that you can choose English, French, or Spanish for the color words. That's great, but I can speak enough French and Spanish to tell that some of these words are pronounced so poorly that it's hard to make out what the little electronic voice is saying (some of them make me laugh). Don't expect your child to "pick up" all these words while blithely playing with the Octoplush. The quality is not good enough for that. If the recordings were better (which would be easy for the company to do), then maybe so. This is the main reason why I don't give this toy a 5-star rating. I think this is its biggest fault...the poor quality of the recordings for the words (including the English too).

But that being said, this toy only costs about $12 so I think it's well worth the price.
