 "Just what I needed" 2010-02-26

I use this as an extra diaper bag-perfect for travel. I pack it away then use it when I am out and about and don't want to bring my big diaper bag with me. Plus it's nice that it VIPs on to my carrier. Makes life much easier with a toddler.

Works wonderfully with the Ergo Carrier, or on its own. I keep it stocked like a diaper bag at all times so I can grab and go. Sometimes I carry it, or hook it easily to my stroller, or use it with the carrier on a hike. What a great bag!

It is light, sturdy, and superbly functional.

 "GREAT with carrier!" 2009-03-22
By S. Getchel (Sacramento, CA)
Bought this with the Ergo carrier! It's the same AMAZING cotton canvas. Incredibly sturdy - clips to carrier and is a great shape for the carrier. Love that the side zip pocket can be accessed from the top as well! Nice surprise! Fits more stuff than I thought it would. I can't access the top when I've got the carrier on my back (duh!) but I can get into the side zip pocket and mesh cup holder on side. I am blessed they made this for the carrier (flying alone with my two boys soon) because I now do not have to carry something extra like a backpack for everything we need. Fit all I needed -diapers wipes clothes food ect.! Black looks great with Camel carrier!

LooooooOOooOoOove it!

"Use a blanket or small towel instead" 2009-07-08
By Y. R. Wu (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
As much as we love the Ergo Baby, this insert thing just frustrated us. It doesn't really fit very well and is hard to get in place. We watched the video over and over...

It's very floppy / flimsy and really doesn't provide any support for the babies head (which is why we thought it would be good to have)

We ended up using a lightweight fleece blanket about 2-1/2 foot square.

I don't think you need this.

 "Not a complete necessity" 2009-10-18
By laspgh (Pittsburgh, PA)
If you have a baby sling, the infant insert is not necessary. When my baby was small enough to need the insert for the Ergo I generally put him in the sling. By 10 weeks (long for his age, but average weight) he was able to use the Ergo without the insert. The one downside is that using the insert makes the Ergo less comfortable on your back...so if you use it don't be discouraged - it is really comfortable without it!

The ERGO is the way to go when it comes to baby carriers. It's the best all around choice for carrying a baby anywhere from around the house to public places. The ERGO baby carrier is conveniently compact, comfortable to wear and provides sturdy support for your baby. The ergonomic design of the carrier ensures that your baby is in the correct sitting position to encourage proper hip, pelvis and spine growth. It does this by distributing most of the baby's weight between its hips and thighs. The design also considers the health and comfort of parents. The carrier balances the baby's weight to the parents' hips and shoulders, reducing physical stress. The padded waist belt supports the lumbar area plus 1" thick padding in the shoulder straps. It can be worn on front, back or hip and can easily be changed from one to the other. Ergo is perfect for when baby is too heavy for a sling or for when you plan on carrying your baby for extended periods of time, especially for hiking and walking. Unlike other frame back packs, with the ERGO the baby is right against your back so their weight seems less. When carrying a traditional hard frame back pack, your baby's center of gravity is further from your body and can be awkward and feel heavier. For comfortably carrying your infant, try the ERGO Infant Insert (sold separately). It supports your newborn like a baby sling while having both hands free to work. Features: Recommended use from newborn (with additional Infant Insert sold separately) up to 40 lbs Adjusts for most sizes, waist circumference extends from 25" up to 43" Attached Sleeping Hood supports sleeping baby's head and expands with the growth of your child Convenient pocket on back of carrier with side zipper for easy access. 100% organic cotton twill that is incredibly soft.

 "Most comfortable baby carrier" 2009-07-15
By S. Choy (Hawaii)
I started using the Baby Bjorn but it killed my shoulders after about an hour of wearing. Then I tried the Snugli which amounted to about the same thing and I hated that it had to be slipped over my head for wearing. Then there was the Infantino Front 2 Back which I didn't successfully use. It had so many straps and adjustments. ... I didn't fully try that out because in the meantime, I came upon the Porte Bebe, tried it out in the store and loved it immediately.

There is no strain on my shoulders and my then 5 month old seemed so comfortable in it. Now she's about 19 pounds and I can still carry her for hours with both hands free either on my back or on my chest. She's comfortable and will sleep either way. The carrier isn't very flattering when worn with baby on the back because the bottom strap digs into my not-so-large-yet-not-so-firm-belly and creates an unsightly bulge but it's comfortable nonetheless. Baby's weight rests mostly on the hips and it's so natural that I don't even notice it. The privacy hood is very useful for supporting baby's head when asleep and creates a more restful environment while still allowing her to peek out if awake. The pouch is easily accessible when carrying in the front and is quite roomy. It's about an 8 inch square.

I have the black, all cotton version. The fabric breathes and is very soft though it attracts lint very easily. It seems very well made though the manufacturer doesn't recommend washing it often and drying it all the way through.

Though it's a bit pricey, it's really worth every penny and will save your shoulders and back! I use it every day and I can tell that my baby absolutely loves being in it.

 "Happy baby, happy mommy!" 2009-02-08
By E. Perryman
Our son is ten months old and it took a few rides in the carrier to get used to it, but now he gets excited when he sees me pull it out and put it on.

It is great at putting the weight on my hips and not my back...baby weighes in at 21.5 lbs.(which is a fifth of my weight). I wear him on the back or hip and it is wonderful. I am able to stand up straight and I can tell that I have good posture while wearing it. Having two hands to do things is great...but baby would rather be hiking in it than cooking with mommy.

Great product! So happy that I found it! I would highly recommend this to anyone for an older infant...but since I haven't tried it with a newborn, I can't say...YET!

The ERGO Baby Carrier's ergonomic design supports a correct sitting position for the baby's hip, pelvis and spine growth. It disperses most of the baby's weight between the hips and thighs, which helps to eliminate compression of the spine when hanging by the crotch which most other designs require. The ERGO also balances the baby's weight to parents' hips and shoulders, and alleviates physical stress for the parent.

"It's no mei tai - but still worth the hype!" 2009-11-27
By Victoria Satterfield (Seattle, WA USA)
I'm a carrier addict and recently (reluctantly) added an Ergo to my collection. I own a ring sling, Moby, Babyhawk Mei Tai, and an Ergo. The Babyhawk and the Ergo are by far my favorites. I tried the Ergo on in a local boutique and was so impressed. It made my 20 pound 4 month old feel nearly 10 pounds lighter as soon as I strapped him in. I really love the Ergo's design - it's easy to use, sturdy, and the pull-up hood is a fantastic feature. But the main reason I decided to buy the Ergo is it's lack of dangling staps. I live in Seattle and didn't like the way the straps of my Babyhawk would drag on the muddy ground while I was trying to put it on outdoors in parking lots, etc. With the Ergo, nothing ever touches the ground so I knew I had to have one once the rainy season started to hit. Overall, I still prefer my Babyhawk because it's much quicker to get on and I loved getting to completely customize all the fabric choices and features on their website. Don't get me wrong, the Ergo is super easy - but coming down from the BabyHawk, all the straps and adjustments that have to be made each time you put it on can seem a bit cumbersome. Hence the 1 star deduction. Still, worth every cent I paid for it!

"the first baby carrier that doesn't hurt my back!" 2009-11-08
By Silea (New York, NY, USA)
I'm sorry for the exclamation point in the title, but it's necessary.

My son charted his own growth curve, going from 25th weight percentile at birth to 95th+ weight percentile by six months. He crossed the 95th+ percentile for height at three months. People rarely believe me when i tell them his age, often guessing he's nearly twice as old.

When he was little, we used a baby bjorn carrier. It was ok, but not terribly comfortable, no matter how i adjusted the straps and tension. That carrier put the baby's weight so high up on my back that i always felt hunched over.

When he outgrew the bjorn, i tried a sling. I bought one with some padding in the shoulder, since i'm a little bony. The simplicity of a sling is great, and for a while it worked well. But once my son passed 20lbs, i couldn't keep him in the sling for more than about 15 minutes before my back would start to ache.

Right around then, he started getting some stranger anxiety, so grocery shopping became a very unhappy event if he was consigned to the stroller or cart.

After hearing a few good things about the Ergo, i decided to give it a shot. It's not cheap, but the ability to grocery shop without my son howling in the stroller was very tempting.

The Ergo is wonderful. It puts a lot of the baby's weight on your waist instead of your shoulders and back, and the weight that does end up on your shoulders is evenly distributed instead of the one-sided pull of a sling. The straps are so padded that it never feels tight or digs in. I can get a whole grocery shopping trip in before he starts fussing, and i don't ache at all afterward. The Ergo is more than worth the price.

 "Worth the investment!" 2009-11-06
By Megan M. Mcbride (Friday Harbor, WA)
I have a Bjorn, a Sleepy Wrap, and an Ergo. I like the Ergo the best HANDS DOWN. It has hip straps so that all the weight isn't on your back. The Bjorn kills my back and I'm a healthy 25 year old with no previous back problems. My baby is only 13 pounds and he's way too heavy for it. They say it goes up to 25 pounds but there's no way...

The Ergo can be used up to 40 pounds and switched from front to back when he/she's too heavy for the front. It can also be used on your hip. The cover flap is nice to cover their face from the elements.

The Sleepy wrap is such a pain to wrap when you're traveling. It's like 4 yards of fabric and if you're getting out of the car it's hard to put it on without getting it on the ground. Plus it doesn't have the hip support like the Ergo... again it puts the weight right on your back like the Bjorn.

 "Essential carrier; great fabric" 2009-09-13
By C.P. (USA)
Like many of the other reviewers, I went through numerous carriers (2 slings, baby bjorn, and lascal) before I found the Ergo Baby Carrier. It is an essential baby item. If I could only keep one baby product, this would be it. Here is why I like it so much:

Comfort Level: The Ergo is amazingly comfortable. I am 5'1", 110 lbs and baby is 10 months, 28 inches, 21 lbs. The other carriers all caused back or shoulder pain that made it impossible for me to wear them for very long. (I will say that a sling is useful to have for a newborn. But once baby gains a little weight, the sling really kills your shoulder.) I use the Ergo every weekday to take baby to and from daycare. And on the weekends, I can wear her for hours while I run errands and tidy up the house. I have narrow hips, and initially I experienced some lower-back pain with prolonger wear; however, I realized that I was wearing the waist strap too high. Once I positioned the waist strap a little lower, the lower-back pain disappeared. The carrier does make my pants slide down, which gives me a saggy-butt look that is not flattering. But I found that if I wear mom jeans and a longer length shirt, then it looks okay. My husband also really likes the Ergo. We have no problem adjusting it to go from me to him, and he is 6'2".

Fabric Quality: The brown organic fabric is high quality. It looks nice (not cheap) and doesn't show lint or cat hair. It is a little faded looking, which I think is standard for organic products, but it still has a rich brown color. Baby had a leaky pee diaper one day while she was in it, and it cleaned up really well with a hand washing. By the way, there is a zippered pocket on the front of the carrier. It is pretty spacious--I can get my keys, iphone, credit cards, and a small pack of tissues in there.

Baby Comfort: Baby really loves being in this carrier, which has greatly improved my quality of life. If she is cranky, I can put her in the carrier and walk her around, and she either perks up or falls asleep.

Accessories: I highly recommend getting the sucking pads. The first thing baby did when I put her in the carrier was suck on the straps. I also purchased the blue backpack, which looks great with the brown carrier. The backpack is great because it is lightweight so you can throw some diapers, wipes, etc. in there without weighing yourself down. On weekends, I put baby in the carrier and throw the backpack on, and then walk about a mile to the park without any trouble.

Very highly recommend. This is my new favorite present to give moms-to-be.
